He established the concept of pure-line seed supply and developed equipment for spinning small samples. His most significant discovery was that deliberate genetic selection could improve yarn strength, which revolutionized cotton breeding at his time. In 1931 he delivered an annual Textile Institute lecture on Egyptian cotton aspects; it later became known as Current Changes in Technology of Cotton Spinning и Cultivation.In 1934 Dr. Balls received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). During World War II, he served military forces and was appointed Chairman of a scientific advisory committee to Middle East HQs, where his work on mine detection became crucial.

Balls gained honorary fellowship from Textile Institute in 1943 и received Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1944. In 1952 he was awarded an honorary Doctorate by Manchester University.He retired in 1947, returning to Cambridgeshire where he wrote The yield of a crop (1953), which explained how high water tables affected Egyptian cotton yields.Balls died on July 18th, 1960 at age 77.
