Savage Pond

Savage Pond is an action pond simulation game, written by Peter Judd for Acorn Electron and BBC Micro, with Gwyll Jones adapting it later to Atari 8-bit computers in '83 and Commodore 64 in '84. The original release was under the Starcade label; Argus acquired Bug-Byte's budget line in '85.

Overview

The game places you as a tadpole navigating through an aquatic environment, aiming for frog colony growth while avoiding various threats. It stands out with its realistic depiction of pond life – unusual at that time compared to other arcade games like Frogger and Centipede which were more fantastical or abstract in design.Instructions include detailed descriptions about the creatures (Latin names), but this information is not directly game-related, making it seem educational yet fast-paced.

Gameplay

Starting with Colony 1, a peaceful pond where tadpoles eat amoebas. The only danger are hydra at bottom that sting if touched; dragonflies drop eggs which can be eaten or hatch into nymphs chasing the player's character.Progressing through colonies involves evolving hazards: blood worms lead to beetle larvae and then more complex challenges like jellyfish, radioactive waste, cave areas, water spiders, fleas. Each evolution requires new steps for survival.Comments:The game offers a unique blend of educational content with arcade action, showcasing accurate pond ecology in the context of an engaging challenge. The variety of creatures and their behaviors make it both immersive and strategic.
