The game allows up to five adventurers to enter a castle with the goal of collecting eight pieces of an ancient scepter. Once this task is completed, the red dragon attacks them.

Bruce Campbell reviewed Reign of the Red Dragon for Space Gamer No. 66 and commented that 'If you enjoy games like these, I recommend Reign of the Red Dragon as superior to other similar programs in its price range.'In an October 1982 issue of 80-U.S. Journal, David Tinis compared it with Hellfire Warrior and concluded: "The graphics are well done despite no sound; overall, this is a very enjoyable game.
